Drexel Hill Regional Catholic Parish Religious Education Program
Position is full time effective July 01

The position of Director/Coordinator of Religious Education (DRE or CRE) is a full time position.  The Director of Religious Education must be a practicing Catholic, in good standing with the Church.  Additionally, he/she is a person of prayer committed to the authentic teaching of the Catholic faith.  

The Director/Coordinator of Religious Education reports directly to the Board of Pastors.  As a member of the parish staff, the Director/Coordinator of Religious Education works with other staff members to foster and maintain a working environment where worship, prayer, hospitality, and learning are the primary motivators.

The Director/Coordinator of Religious Education is a professional catechetical leader who assists adults, adolescents, and children of the parish in their faith formation. 

Educational Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Theology or Religious Studies OR 3-5 years experience in these or similar fields
  • Master Catechetical Certification – Office for Catechetical Formation, Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  If not, the candidate agrees to obtain this certification within eight (8) years of date of hire.

Qualification

  • This person must provide (or obtain before employment) clearance required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: PA Criminal Background Check and FBI Fingerprint Check.  Also, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia requires:  a) Protecting God’s Children (Safe Environment Part I) b) Mandated Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse (Safe Environment Part II).

The responsibilities of the Director/Coordinator of Religious Education include, but are not limited to:  

  • Oversee the Combined Religious Education Program (PREP) of four parishes for Grades 1-7.
  • Have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Have competent office, email, Microsoft Office, Flock Note, organizational, and communication skills. Have proficient use of technology as needed.
  • Be able to communicate effectively and meet in-person with parents/guardians of children should needs arise.
  • Be able to work with and communicate effectively with multiple pastors and parish secretaries in an organized manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and help cultivate a culture of trust.
  • Serve as a liaison between the pastors and the catechist team.
  • Be familiar with all Archdiocesan PREP policies/procedures from the Office of Catechetical Formation.
  • Belongs to the Archdiocesan Association of Parish Directors, Coordinators, Administrators of Religious Education (PDCARE Association).
  • Participates in Archdiocesan-sponsored events such as the Catechist Convocation, Mass for Religious Education, D/CRE Gathering in Avalon Fall and Spring Professional Development  Days, Retreats, and County meetings. 
  • Oversees the budget for all expenses related to the Parish Religious Education Program.  Follows the budgetary procedures as set by the Board of Pastors, Parish Finance Committee, and/or Parish Business Manager.
  • Ensures, in collaboration with the Safe Environment Coordinator, that the Safe Environment requirements, policies, clearances, and mandates for Parish Religious Education catechists/aides and other volunteers are in compliance with the Office for Child and Youth Protection, and they are kept on file. 
  • Supervise all catechists/aides, assuring they teach necessary curriculum and communicate the teachings of the Catholic Faith to the children.
  • Recruit, orient, and provide ongoing professional training and spiritual development for the Parish Religious Education catechists and other volunteers, assuring each grade level has sufficient numbers for children.
  • Communicate weekly PREP updates to catechists/aides, parents, and parishes.  
  • Research and requisition resources (AV, textbooks, liturgy materials, reference works, etc.) which complement the religious education efforts in the parishes.
  • Order all necessary materials/workbooks for the academic year and replenish as necessary.
  • Distribute and collect all PREP registration forms, collect all PREP fees, and follow up with late payments. 
  • Maintain updated electronic records of all students/families; track their progress and assess sacramental needs.
  • Coordinate a plan to establish safe drop-off and pick-up procedures, take necessary precautions to assure the building is opened/locked, all lights turned on/off, and the building is safe.
  • Be physically present at all PREP sessions, sacramental liturgies, retreats, and other times as needed.
  • Actively recruit, advertise, and encourage new children/families to participate in our PREP Program.
  • Provides access and inclusion for children with special learning needs.
  • Coordinate and schedule sacramental liturgies for each parish according to each pastor’s directives.  Assist the pastor in the planning and preparation of each sacramental liturgy – First Penance, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. Coordinate with the music director.  
  • Coordinate and effectively lead training sessions/retreat day for all parish children which includes how to correctly receive First Penance, First Communion, and Confirmation. 
  • Host training sessions for parents/sponsors and effectively communicate their task of serving as examples of the Catholic Faith.
  • Communicate effectively with parish school (*if the parish has a school) religion teachers and PREP catechists on the children’s knowledge and skill-set of preparing for each Sacrament.
  • Schedule Advent and Lenten Penance Services with the opportunity for individual confessions for the parish Religious Education children. Work with the pastors to assure necessary visiting priest confessors are scheduled.
  • Coordinate and successfully run a combined week-long parish Summer Bible Camp. 
  • Other needs/tasks as they arise.
